Methods:Archivesof11leadinginternational,English-languagemediaweresearched.Acontentanalysiswasdone,coding formediaorganisation,date,author,typeofreport,slant,themes,and‘‘frames’’.Semi-structuredinterviewswithjournalists andkeyinformantswereconductedforfurtherinsight. PrincipalFindings:Only113articlesina53-monthtimeperiodmettheinclusioncriteria,withnostrongtrendsorincreases incoverage.Overall,theBBChadthehighestcoveragewith20results,followedbytheFinancialTimesandAgenceFrance Presse.CNNhadtheleastcoveragewithoneresult.Theterm‘‘neglecteddiseases’’hadgoodmediacurrencyand‘‘sleeping sickness’’wasfarmorewidelyusedthantrypanosomiasis.Thediseasemostcoveredwasleishmaniasisandtheleastcovered wasChagas.Academicresearchers weremostcommonlyquotedasamainsource,whiletheWorldHealthOrganization (WHO) and pharmaceutical industry were the least quoted. Journalists generally agreed NTDs had not been adequately covered,butsaidalackofrealnewsdevelopmentandtheneedtocatertodomesticaudiencesweremajorobstaclesfor NTDreporting.Alljournalistssaidhealthagencies,particularlyWHO,werenotcommunicatingadequatelyabouttheburden ofNTDs.
