Optically pure L-lactic acid is essential for polymerization of PLA. The high fermentation cost of L-lactic acid is another limitationforPLApolymerstocompetewithconventionalplastics. Methodology/Principal Findings: A Bacillus sp. strain 2–6 for production of L-lactic acid was isolated at 55uC from soil samples. Itsthermophilic characteristic madeitagood lactic acid producer becauseoptically pure L-lactic acid couldbe producedbythisstrainunderopenconditionwithoutsterilization.In5-literbatchfermentationofBacillussp.2–6,118.0g/ literof L-lacticacidwithanopticalpurityof99.4%wasobtainedfrom121.3g/literofglucose.Theyieldwas97.3%andthe averageproductivitywas4.37g/liter/h.Themaximum L-lacticacidconcentrationof182.0g/literwasobtainedfrom30-liter fed-batchfermentationwithanaverageproductivityof3.03g/liter/handproductopticalpurityof99.4%. Conclusions/Significance:WiththenewlyisolatedBacillussp.strain2–6,highconcentrationofopticallypure L-lacticacid couldbeproducedefficientlyinopenfermentationwithoutsterilization,whichwouldleadtoanewcost-effectivemethod forpolymer-grade L-lacticacidproductionfromrenewabl
