OpenAccesstotheScientificJournalLiterature: Situation2009 Bo-ChristerBjo¨rk1,PatrikWelling1,MikaelLaakso1*,PeterMajlender1,TuridHedlund1 ,Gueni Guenason2 1HANKENSchoolofEconomics,Helsinki,Finland,2InnovationCenterIceland,Reykjavik,Iceland Abstract Background:TheInternethasrecentlymadepossiblethefreeglobalavailabilityofscientificjournalarticles.OpenAccess (OA) can occur either via OA scientific journals, or via authors posting manuscripts of articles published in subscription journalsinopenwebrepositories.SofartherehavebeenfewsystematicstudiesshowinghowbigtheextentofOAis,in particularstudiescoveringallfieldsofscience. Methodology/PrincipalFindings:Theproportionofpeerreviewedscholarlyjournalarticles,whichareavailableopenlyin fulltextontheweb,wasstudiedusingarandomsampleof1837titlesandawebsearchengine.Ofarticlespublishedin 2008,8,5%werefreelyavailableatthepublishers’sites.Foranadditional11,9%freemanuscriptversionscouldbefound usingsearchengines,makingtheoverallOApercentage20,4%.Chemistry(13%)hadthelowestoverallshareofOA,Earth Sciences(33%)thehighest.Inmedicine,biochemistryandchemistrypublishinginOAjournalswasmorecommon.Inall otherfieldsauthor-postedmanuscriptcopiesdominatedthepicture. Conclusions/Significance: The results show that OA already has a significant positive impact on the availability of the scientificjournalliteratureandthattherearebigdifferencesbetweenscientificdisciplinesintheuptake.Duetothelackof awarenessofOA-publishingamongscientistsinmostfieldsoutsidephysics,theresultsshouldbeofgeneralinteresttoall scholars.Theresultsshouldalsointerestacademicpublishers,whoneedtotakeintoaccountOAintheirbusinessstrategies andcopyrightpolicies,aswellasresearchfunders,wholiketheNIHarestartingtorequireOAavailabilityofresultsfrom researchprojectstheyfund.Themethodandsearchtoolsdevelopedalsoofferagoodbasisformorein-depthstudiesas wellaslongitudinalstudies.
