Abstract Background:Bisphosphonate-relatedosteonecrosisofthejaw(BRONJ)isaclinicalconditioncharacterizedbythe presenceofexposedboneinthemaxillofacialregion.Itspathogenesisisstillundetermined,butmaybeassociated withriskfactorssuchasrheumatoidarthritis(RA).Theaimofthispaperistoreporttwounpublishedcasesof BRONJinpatientswithRAandtoconductaliteraturereviewofsimilarclinicalcaseswithaviewtodescribethe mainissuesconcerningthesepatients,includingdemographiccharacteristicsandtherapeuticapproachesapplied. Methods:TwocasereportsofBRONJinvolvingRApatientswerediscussed Results:Bothpatientswereagingfemaletakingalendronateformorethan3years.Lesionsweredetectedin stageIIinposteriormandiblewithnocleartriggeragent.Thetreatmentappliedconsistedofantibiotics,oralrinses withchlorhexidine,drugdiscontinuationandsurgicalprocedures.Completehealingofthelesionswasachieved. Conclusions:Thispaperbringstolightthenecessityforrheumatologiststobeawareofthepotentialrisktotheir patientsofdevelopingBRONJandtoworktogetherwithdentistsforthepreventionandearlydetectionofthe lesions.AlthoughsomefeaturesseemtolinkRAwithoralBRONJandactassynergisticeffects,morestudies shouldbedevelopedtosupportthescientificbasesforthishypothesis.
