Methods:Weconductedaone-dayobservationalstudyin14randomlyselectedBelgianhospitals.Patientswho metthedefinitionofpalliativepatientswereidentifiedaspalliative.Then,informationabouttheirsocio- demographiccharacteristics,diagnoses,prognosis,andcareplanwererecordedandanalysed. Results:Therewere2639in-patientsonthedayofthestudy;9.4%ofthemwereidentifiedas“palliative” .The meanageofthegroupwas72years.Theprimarydiagnosiswascancerin51%ofpatientsandtheestimatedlife expectancywasshorterthan3monthsin33%ofpatientsandlongerthan1yearin28%ofpatients.The professionalcaregiversexpectedformostofthepatients(73%),thatthetreatmentwouldimprovepatientcomfort ratherthanprolonglife.Antibiotics,transfusions,treatmentsspecifictothepathology,andartificialnutritionwere administeredin90%,78%,57%and50%ofthepatients,respectively,butweregenerallygivenwithaviewto controllingthesymptoms. Conclusions:Thisanalysispresentsafirstnationalestimateofthepalliativeinpatientpopulation.Ourresults confirmthathospitalsplayamajorroleattheend-of-life,withoneoutofteninpatientsidentifiedasa“palliative” patient.Thesedataalsodemonstratethecomplexityofthepalliativepopulationandthesubstantialdiversityof carethattheycanrequire.
