Methods:Atotalof917maleswererecruited,156withadjustmentdisorderandhyperventilationsyndrome (AD+HY),273withadjustmentdisorderwithouthyperventilationsyndrome(AD–HY),and488healthycontrols. AllparticipantscompletedtheParentalBondingInstrument,EysenckPersonalityQuestionnaire,andChinese HealthQuestionnaire. Results:Analysisusingstructuralequationmodelsidentifiedapathwayrelationshipinwhichparentalbonding affectedpersonalitycharacteristics,personalitycharacteristicsaffectedmentalhealthcondition,andmentalhealth conditionaffectedthedevelopmentofhyperventilationoradjustmentdisorder.MaleswithAD–HYperceivedless paternalcare,andthosewithAD+HYperceivedmorematernalprotectionthanthosewithadjustmentdisorder andthoseinthecontrolgroup.ParticipantswithAD–HYweremoreneuroticandlessextrovertedthanthosewith AD+HY.Bothgroupsshowedpoorermentalhealththanthecontrols. Conclusions:Althoughsomepatientswithhyperventilationsyndromedemonstratedsymptomsofadjustment disorder,thereweredifferentpredisposingfactorsbetweenthetwogroupsintermsofparentalbondingand personalitycharacteristics.Thisfindingisimportantfortheearlyinterventionandpreventionofhyperventilation andadjustmentdisorder.
