Methods:Weconsecutivelyenrolled100allergicchildren;2-10yearsold(mean6.5yr).Thestudymeasurements includedclinicalevaluationforsiteofallergy,possibleprecipitatingfactors,consumptionofpeanuts(startingage andlastconsumption),durationofbreastfeeding,currenttreatment,andfamilyhistoryofallergyaswellasskin pricktestingwithacommercialpeanutextract,andserumpeanutspecificandtotalIgEestimation.Childrenwho werefoundsensitizedtopeanutsweresubjectedtoanopenoralpeanutchallengetesttakingallnecessary precautions. Results:Sevensubjects(7%)weresensitizedandthreeoutofsixofthemhadpositiveoralchallengedenoting allergytopeanuts.Thesensitizationratesdidnotvarysignificantlywithgender,age,familyhistoryofallergy,breast feedingduration,clinicalformofallergy,serumtotalIgE,orabsoluteeosinophilcount.Allpeanutsensitivesubjects hadskinwithorwithoutrespiratoryallergy. Conclusions:PeanutallergydoesnotseemtoberareinatopicchildreninEgypt.SkinprickandspecificIgE testingareeffectivescreeningtoolstodeterminecandidatesforpeanutoralchallenging.Widerscalemulticenter population-basedstudiesareneededtoassesstheprevalenceofpeanutallergyanditsclinicalcorrelatesinour country.
