Ilknur?zen1,JordiBoix1andGesinePaul1,2* Abstract Perivascularadultstemcellshavebeenisolatedfromseveraltissues,includingtheadulthumanbrain.Theyhave uniquesignaturesresemblingbothpericytesandmesenchymalstemcells.Understandingthenatureofthesecells intheirspecificvascularnichesisimportanttodeterminetheirclinicalpotentialasanewadultstemcellsource. Indeed,theyhavepromisingfeaturesinvitrointermsofmultipotency,immunomodulationandsecretionofgrowth factorsandcytokines.However,theirinvivofunctionislessknownasyet.Recentemergingdatashowacrucialrole ofperivascularmesenchymalstemcellsintissuehomeostasisandrepair.Furthermore,thesecellsmayplayan importantroleinadultstemcellnicheregulationandinneurodegeneration.Herewereviewtherecentliterature onperivascularmesenchymalstemcells,discusstheirdifferentinvitrofunctionsandhighlightespeciallythe specificpropertiesofbrain-derivedperivascularmesenchymalstemcells.Wesummarizecurrentevidencethat suggestsanimportantinvivofunctionofthesecellsintermsoftheirregenerativepotentialthatmayindicatea newtargetcellforendogenoustissueregenerationandrepair.
