Design:Retrospectiveauditofpathologyresults. Setting:CommunitybasedcohortinMelbourneovertheperiodJuly2006–October2009. Participants:1136Karenrefugeechildrenandadults,representingalmostcompletelocalareasettlementand48%oftotal VictorianKarenhumanitarianintakeforthetimeperiod. MainOutcomeMeasures:Prevalenceofpositivetestresultsforrefugeehealthscreening,withbreakdownbyagegroup (,6years,6–11years,12–17years,18yearsandolder). Results:Overallprevalencefigureswere:anaemia9.2%,microcytosis19.1%,irondeficiency13.1%,lowvitaminB121.5%,low folate 1.5%, abnormal thyroid function tests 4.4%, vitamin D,50nmol/L 33.3%, hypocalcaemia 7.4%, raised alkaline phosphatase 5.2%, abnormal liver transaminases 16.1%, hepatitis B surface antigen positive 9.7%, hepatitis B surface antibody positive 49.5%, isolated hepatitis B core antibody positive 9.0%, hepatitis C positive 1.9%, eosinophilia 14.4%, Schistosomainfection7%,Strongyloidesinfection20.8%,malaria0.2%,faecalparasites43.4%.Quantiferon-goldscreening waspositivein20.9%.NocasesofsyphilisorHIVwereidentified.Serologicalimmunitytovaccinepreventablediseaseswas 87.1%formeasles,95%formumpsand66.4%forrubella;56.9%ofthosetestedhadseroimmunitytoallthree. Conclusions:Karenrefugeeshavehighratesofnutritionaldeficienciesandinfectiousdiseasesandmaybesusceptibleto vaccinepreventablediseases.Thesedatasupporttheneedforpost-arrivalhealthscreeningandaccessible,fundedcatch-up immunisation.
