We undertook between June and September 2006 a retrospectivecohortstudyaimedatassessingthecourseoflaterheumaticmanifestationsandinvestigatingpotentialrisk factorsassociatedwiththepersistenceoftheserheumaticmanifestationsover15months.147participants(.16yrs)with laboratory-confirmedCHIKVdiseasediagnosedbetweenMarch1andJune30,2005,wereidentifiedthroughasurveillance databaseandinterviewedbytelephone.Atthe15-month-periodevaluationafterdiagnosis,84of147participants(57%) self-reportedrheumaticsymptoms.Ofthese84patients,53(63%)reportedpermanenttroublewhile31(37%)hadrecurrent symptoms.Age$45years(OR=3.9,95%CI1.7–9.7),severeinitialjointpain(OR=4.8,95%CI1.9–12.1),andpresenceof underlyingosteoarthritiscomorbidity(OR=2.9,95%CI1.1–7.4)werepredictorsofnonrecovery.Ourfindingssuggestthat long-termCHIKVrheumaticmanifestationsseemtobeafrequentunderlyingpost-epidemiccondition.Threeindependent riskfactorsthatmayaidinearlyrecognitionofpatientswiththehighestriskofpresentingprolongedCHIKVillnesswere identified.
