Inthis paper weusesocial network analysis toinvestigatetheimpact ofvariationin predation risk on the socialstructureofguppyshoalsandthefrequencyanddurationofshoalsplitting(fission)andmerging(fusion)events.Our analysesrevealedthat variationinthelevelofpredationrisk wasassociatedwithdivergentsocial dynamics,withfishin high-risk populations displaying a greater number of associations with overall greater strength and connectedness than thosefromlow-risksites.Temporalpatternsoforganisationalsodifferedaccordingtopredationrisk, withfissionevents morelikelytooccurovertwoshorttimeperiods(5minutesand20minutes)inlow-predationfishandoverlongertime scales(.1.5hours)inhigh-predationfish.Ourfindingssuggestthatpredationriskinfluencesthefine-scalesocialstructure ofpreypopulationsandthatthetemporalaspectsoforganisationplayakeyroleindefiningsocialsystems.
