Methods:AretrospectivecohortstudywasconductedamongHIVinfectedpatientsonARTineasternEthiopia.Cox regressionandKaplan-Meieranalyseswereperformedtoinvestigatefactorsthatinfluencetimetodeathand survivalovertime. Result:Atotalof1540studyparticipantswereincludedinthestudy.Fromtheregisteredpatientsinthecohort, theoutcomeofpatientsasactive,deceased,losttofollowupandtransferoutwas1005(67.2%),86(5.9%),210 (14.0%)and192(12.8%)respectively.Theoverallmortalityrateprovidesanincidencedensityof2.03deathsper100 personyears(95%CI1.64-2.50).Outofatotalof86deathsover60monthperiod;63(73.3%)diedduringthefirst 12months,10(11.6%)duringthesecondyear,and10(11.6%)inthethirdyearoffollowup.Inmultivariateanalysis, theindependentpredictorsformortalitywerelossofmore10%weightloss,bedriddenfunctionalstatusatbaseline, ≤200CD4cellcount/ml,andadvancedWHOstagepatients. Conclusion:Alowerlevelofmortalitywasdetectedamongthecohortofpatientsonantiretroviraltreatmentin easternEthiopia.Previoushistoryofweightloss,bedriddenfunctionalstatusatbaseline,lowCD4cellcountand advancedWHOstatuspatientshadahigherriskofdeath.EarlyinitiationofART,provisionofnutritionalsupportand strengtheningofthefoodbyprescriptioninitiative,andcounselingofpatientsforearlypresentationtotreatmentis recommended.
