Results:Ourprotocolseeksgenefamilieswithanunusualfrequencyof5’terminatorsfoundacrossmultiple species.Manyofthedetectedattenuatorsarepartofannotatedelements,suchasriboswitchesorT-boxes,which oftenoperatethroughtranscriptionalattenuation.However,asignificantfractionofcandidateswerenotpreviously characterizedinspiteoftheirunmistakablefootprint.Wefurthercharacterizedsomeofthesenewelementsusing sequenceandsecondarystructureanalysis.Wealsopresentelementsthatmaycontroltheexpressionofseveral non-homologousgenes,suggestingco-transcriptionandresponsetocommonsignals.Animportantclassofsuch elements,whichwecalledmobileattenuators,isprovidedby3’terminatorsofinsertionsequencesorprophages thatmaybeexaptedas5’regulatorswheninserteddirectlyupstreamofacellulargene. Conclusions:Weshowherethatattenuatorsinvolveacomplexlandscapeofsignal-detectionstructuresspanning theentirebacterialdomain.Wediscusspossiblescenariosthroughwhichthesediverse5’regulatorystructuresmay ariseorevolve.
