Design:Retrospectivecohortanalysis. Setting:Tertiaryacademicreferralcenter. Methods:Aretrospectivereviewof100childrenundergoingnewbornhearingscreeningwasconducted.Extensive datacollectionwasperformed,andthisdatawasanalyzedforapotentialcorrelationbetweenfailureofnewborn hearingscreeningandincreasedprenatalultrasoundexposure,aswellasforapotentialcorrelationofother variableswithhearingloss. Mainoutcomemeasures:Postnatalhearingoutcomes. Results:Ahighernumberofbothtotaland3rdtrimesterultrasoundexamsaswellasayoungergestationalageat birthwereallfoundtobesignificantlyassociatedwithahigherlikelihoodofpassingthenewbornhearingscreen (p0.001foreach).Nootherfactorswerefoundtoreachstatisticalsignificance. Conclusions:Ourresultsshowthatthereisnocorrelationbetweenahigherlevelofprenatalultrasoundexposure andhearingloss.Indeed,infantswhohadmoreprenatalultrasoundsinthethirdtrimesterweremorelikelytopass theirscreeninghearingexams.Thefindingthatchildrenreceivingmoreprenatalultrasoundshaveahigher likelihoodofpassingnewbornhearingscreensservesasanexcellentreminderoftheclassicstatisticsrulethat correlationdoesnotimplycausation.
