Lanesetal.BMCPublicHealth2011,11:302 /1471-2458/11/302 RESEARCH ARTICLE OpenAccess PrevalenceandcharacteristicsofPostpartum DepressionsymptomatologyamongCanadian women:across-sectionalstudy AndreaLanes*,JenniferLKukandHalaTamim Abstract Background:Thisstudyaimstolookattheprevalenceandcharacteristicsofpostpartumdepression symptomatology(PPDS)amongCanadianwomen.Studieshavefoundthatindevelopedcountries,10-15%of newmotherswereaffectedbymajorpostpartumdepression.Motherswhosufferfrompostpartumdepression mayenduredifficultiesregardingtheirabilitytocopewithlifeevents,aswellasnegativeclinicalimplicationsfor maternal-infantattachment. Methods:Ananalysisbasedon6,421Canadianwomen,whohadalivebirthbetween2005and2006andwere partoftheMaternityExperienceSurvey(MES),wasperformed.PPDSwasmeasuredbasedontheEdinburgh PostnatalDepressionScale.Variousfactorsthatassessedsocio-economicstatus,demographicfactors,andmaternal characteristicswereconsideredforthemultinomialregressionmodel. Results:Thenationalprevalenceofminor/majorandmajorPPDSwasfoundtobe8.46%and8.69%respectively. Amother’sstresslevelduringpregnancy,theavailabilityofsupportafterpregnancy,andapriordiagnosisof depressionwerethecharacteristicsthathadthestrongestsignificantassociationwiththedevelopmentofPPDS. Conclusions:AsignificantnumberofCanadianwomenexperiencesymptomsofpostpartumdepression.Findings fromthisstudymaybeusefultoincreaseboththeattainmentoftreatmentandtherateatwhichitcanbe obtainedamongnewmothers.InterventionsshouldtargetthosewiththegreatestriskofexperiencingPPDS, specificallyimmigrantandadolescentmothers.
