Methods:Across-sectional,population-based,telephoneinterviewsurveyincludingallmunicipalitiesofPortugal wasundertaken.ParticipantswererandomlyselectedtoansweraquestionnairebasedonthePortugueseversion oftheGA2LENsurvey.‘Currentasthma’wasdefinedasself-reportedlifetimeasthmaandatleastoneof3 symptomsinthelast12months:wheezing,wakingwithbreathlessnessorhavinganasthmaattack. Results:Datawereobtainedfor6003respondents,withmeanageof38.9(95%CI38.2-39.6)yearsand57.3% females.InthePortuguesepopulation,theprevalenceof‘Currentasthma’was6.8%(95%CI6.0-7.7)andof‘Lifetime asthma’was10.5%(95%CI9.5-11.6)UsingGA2LENdefinitionforasthma,ourprevalenceestimatewas7.8%(95%CI 7.0-8.8).Rhinitishadastrongassociationwithasthma(AdjustedOR3.87,95%CI2.90-5.18)andtheassociation betweenupperairwaydiseasesandasthmawasstrongerinpatientswithbothrhinitisandsinusitis(AdjustedOR 13.93,95%CI6.60-29.44). Conclusions:Currentasthmaaffects695000Portuguese,withaprevalenceof6.8%.Peoplewhoreportedboth rhinitisandsinusitishadthehighestriskofhavingasthma.
