Methods:Inthiscross-sectionalstudyarandomsampleof483diabetesout-patientsfromthreediabetesclinicsin Bangladeshwasinvitedtoparticipate.Ofthem417patientstookpart.Depressivesymptomsweremeasuredusing previouslydevelopedandculturallystandardizedBengaliandSylhetiversionsoftheWorldHealthOrganization-5 WellBeingIndex(WHO-5)andthePatientHealthQuestionairre-9(PHQ-9)withpredefinedcut-offscores.Datawas collectedusingtwodifferentmodes;e.g.standardassistedcollectionandaudioquestionnairemethods. Associationsbetweendepressionandpatientcharacteristicswereexploredusingregressionanalysis. Results:Theprevalenceofdepressivesymptomswas34%(PHQ-9score≥5)and36%(WHO-5score52)with audioquestionnairedeliverymethod.Theprevalenceratesweresimilarregardlessofthetype(PHQ-9vs.WHO-5) andlanguage(Sylhetivs.Bengali)ofthequestionnaires,andmethodsofdelivery(standardassistedvs.audio methods).ThesignificantpredictorsofdepressivesymptomsusingeitherthePHQ-9orWHO-5questionnaireswere; age,income,gender,treatmentintensity,andco-morbidcardiovasculardisease.Further,depressionwasstrongly associatedwithpoorglycaemiccontrolandnumberofco-morbidconditions. Conclusions:Thisstudydemonstratedthatdepressionprevalenceiscommoninout-patientswithtype2diabetes inBangladesh.Inasettingwhererecognition,screeningandtreatmentlevelsremainlow,healthcareproviders needtofocustheireffortsondiagnosing,referringandeffectivelytreatingthisimportantdiseaseinorderto improveservicedelivery.
