Methods:412boysand429girlsaged9–10yearsfrom23primaryschoolswereselectedusingstratifiedcluster randomsampling.Alldatawascross-sectionalandcollectedviaanthropometryandself-administered questionnaire.OutcomemeasureswereBMI(kg/m2),prevalenceofoverweight,obesity(InternationalObesityTask Forcedefinitions)andthinness(lowBMIforage).Linearandlogisticregressionanalyses,accountingforclustering attheschoollevel,wereusedtoassessassociationsbetweengender,ethnicity,schoollocation,andschools academicperformance(average)toeachoutcomemeasure. Results:ThedistributionofBMIwasmarginallyskewedwithamorepronouncedpositivetailinthegirls.Median BMIwas15.6kg/m2inboysand15.4kg/m2ingirls,respectively.Inboys,prevalenceofoverweightwas15.8%(95% CI:12.6,19.6),prevalenceofobesity4.9%(95%CI:3.2,7.4)andprevalenceofthinness12.4%(95%CI:9.5,15.9). Amonggirls,18.9%(95%CI:15.5,22.9)wereoverweight,5.1%(95%CI:3.4,7.7)wereobeseand13.1%(95%CI:10.2, 16.6)werethin.UrbanchildrenhadaslightlyhighermeanBMIthanruralchildren(0.5kg/m2,95%CI:0.01,1.00) andwerenearlytwiceaslikelytobeobese(6.7%vs.4.0%;adjustedoddsratio1.6;95%CI:0.9,3.5).Creolechildren werelesslikelytobeclassifiedasthincomparedtoIndianchildren(adjustedoddsratio0.3,95%CI:0.2,0.6). Conclusion:Mauritiusiscurrentlyinthemidstofnutritionaltransitionwithbothahighprevalenceofoverweight andthinnessinchildrenaged9–10years.Thecoexistenceofchildrenrepresentingoppositesidesoftheenergy balanceequationpresentsauniquechallengeforpolicyandinterventions.Furtherexplorationisneededto understandthespecificcausesofthedoubleburdenofmalnutritionandtomakeappropriatepolicy recommendations.
