Caronetal.BMCPsychiatry2012,12:183 /1471-244X/12/183 RESEARCH ARTICLE OpenAccess Prevalenceofpsychologicaldistressandmental disorders,anduseofmentalhealthservicesin theepidemiologicalcatchmentareaofMontreal South-West JeanCaron1*,Marie-JoséeFleury1,MichelPerreault1,AnneCrocker1,JacquesTremblay1,MichelTousignant2, YanKestens3,MargaretCargo4andMarkDaniel4 Abstract Background:ThisreportpresentstheinitialresultsofthefirstEpidemiologicalCatchmentAreaStudyinmental healthinCanada.FiveneighbourhoodsintheSouth-WestsectorofMontreal,withapopulationof258,000,were understudy.Theobjectivesoftheresearchprogramwere:1)toassesstheprevalenceandincidenceof psychologicaldistress,mentaldisorders,substanceabuse,parasuicide,riskybehaviourandqualityoflife;2)to examinethelinksandinteractionsbetweenindividualdeterminants,neighbourhoodecologyandmentalhealthin eachneighbourhood;3)toidentifytheconditionsfacilitatingtheintegrationofindividualswithmentalhealth problems;4)toanalysetheimpactofthesocial,economicandphysicalaspectsoftheneighbourhoodsusinga geographicinformationsystem.5)toverifytheadequacyofmentalhealthservices. Method:Alongitudinalstudyintheformofacommunitysurveywasused,complementedbyfocusedqualitative sub-studies.Thelongitudinalstudyincludedarandomlyselectedsampleof2,433individualsbetweentheagesof 15and65inthefirstwaveofdatacollection,andthreeotherwavesareprojected.Anoverviewofthemethodsis presented. Results:Theprevalenceofpsychologicaldistress,mentaldisordersanduseofmentalhealthservicesandtheir correlatesaredescribedforthefirstwaveofdatacollection. Conclusion:Severalvulnerablegroupsandriskfactorsrelatedtosocio-demographicvariableshavebeenidentified suchas:gender,age,maritalstatus,income,immigrationandlanguage.Theseresultscanbeusedtoimprove treatmentservices,preventionofmentaldisorders,andmentalhealthpromotion.
