Abstract
Background:Previousstudieshaveshowntheshort-termorintermediate-termpracticeofyogatobeusefulfor
amelioratingseveralmentaldisordersandpsychosomaticdisorders.However,littleisknownaboutthelong-term
influencesofyogaonthementalstateorstress-relatedbiochemicalindices.Ifyogatraininghasastress-reduction
effectandalsoimprovesanindividual’smentalstatesforalongtime,long-termyogapractitionersmayhavea
bettermentalstateandlowerstress-relatedbiochemicalindicesincomparisontonon-experiencedparticipants.
Thisstudysimultaneouslyexaminedthedifferencesinmentalstatesandurinarystress-relatedbiochemicalindices
betweenlong-termyogapractitionersandnon-experiencedparticipants.
Methods:Theparticipantswere38healthyfemaleswithmorethan2yearsofexperiencewithyoga(long-term
yogagroup)and37age-matchedhealthyfemaleswhohadnotparticipatedinyoga(controlgroup).Theirmental
stateswereassessedusingtheProfileofMoodStates(POMS)questionnaire.Thelevelofcortisol,8-
hydroxydeoxyguanosine(8-OHdG)andbiopyrrininurinewereusedasstress-relatedbiochemicalindices.
Results:Theaverageself-ratedmentaldisturbance,tension-anxiety,anger-hostility,andfatiguescoresofthelong-
termyogagroupwerelowerthanthoseofthecontrolgroup.Therewasatrendtowardahighervigorscorein
thelong-termyogagroupthanthatinthecontrolgroup.Therewerenosignificantdifferencesinthescoresfor
depressionandconfusioninthePOMSbetweenthetwogroups.Theurine8-OHdGconcentrationshowedatrend
towardtobeinglowerinthelong-termyogagroupincomparisontothecontrolgroup.Therewerenosignificant
differencesinthelevelsofurinebiopyrrinorcortisol.
Conclusions:Thepresentfindingssug
