Tumor and stromaare additional sources of inflammation-related molecules. The study aimed to evaluate,duringcolorectalcarcinogenesisfrombenigntomalignantphases:i)thetrendofserumlevelsofIL-8,IL-6,TGFb1, VEGFandMMPs;ii)theparalleltrendofCRPserumlevels;iii)derangementoftheprincipalTGFb1receptors(TGFb1RI/RII)in tumortissues. Methodology/Principal findings: 96 patients with colon adenomas or CRC at different stages of progression, and 17 controls,wererecruited.SerumIL-8,IL-6,TGFb1,VEGF,MMPsandCRPlevelswereanalyzedbeforeendoscopyorsurgery. TGFb1receptorswereevaluatedinadenomabiopsiesandsurgically-removedcolorectaladenocarcinomas.Serumlevelsof IL-8inadenocarcinomapatientswereincreasedfromstageII,whenalsotheenzymaticactivityofMMP-9increased.Ofnote, theincreasingtrendofthetwoserummarkerswasfoundsignificantlycorrelated.TrendofserumCRPwasalsoverysimilar tothatofIL-8andMMP-9,butjustbelowstatisticalsignificance.TGFb1levelswereloweratstageIIICRC,whileIL-6and VEGF levels had no significant variations. In tissue specimens, TGFb1 receptors were already absent in about 50% of adenomas,andthispercentageofmissingreceptorsmarkedlyincreasedinCRCstagesIIIandIV. Conclusions:
