Al-FayezandOhaeriBMCPsychiatry2011,11:71 /1471-244X/11/71 RESEARCH ARTICLE OpenAccess Profileofsubjectivequalityoflifeanditscorrelates inanation-widesampleofhighschoolstudentsin anArabsettingusingtheWHOQOL-Bref GhenaimAAl-Fayez1andJudeUOhaeri2* Abstract Background:Theupsurgeofinterestinthequalityoflife(QOL)ofchildrenisinlinewiththe1989Conventionon theRightsoftheChild,whichstressedthechild’srighttoadequatecircumstancesforphysical,mental,andsocial development.Thestudy’sobjectiveswereto:(i)highlighthowsatisfiedKuwaitihighschoolstudentswerewithlife circumstancesasintheWHOQOL-Bref;(ii)assesstheprevalenceofatriskstatusforimpairedQOLandestablishthe QOLdomainnormativevalues;and(iii)examinetherelationshipofQOLwithpersonal,parental,andsocio- environmentalfactors. Method:Anation-widesampleofstudentsinseniorclassesingovernmenthighschools(N=4467,48.6%boys; aged14-23years)completedquestionnairesthatincludedtheWHOQOL-Bref. Results:UsingCummins’normof70%-80%,wefoundthat,asagroup,theybarelyachievedthewell-being thresholdscoreforphysicalhealth(70%),socialrelations(72.8%),environment(70.8%)andgeneralfacet(70.2%), butnotforpsychologicalhealth(61.9%).Thesescoreswerelowerthanthosereportedfromothercountries.Using therecommendedcut-offof1SDofpopulationmean,theprevalenceofatriskstatusforimpairedQOLwas 12.9%-18.8%(populationage-adjusted:15.9%-21.1%).Inalldomains,boyshadsignificantlyhigherQOLthan girls,mediatedbyanxiety/depression;whiletheyoungeroneshadsignificantlyhigherQOL(p0.001),mediated bydifficultywithstudiesandsocialrelations.AlthoughpoorerQOLwassignificantlyassociatedwithparental divorceandfather’slowsocio-economicstatus,themostimportantpredictorsofpoorerQOLwereperceptionof pooremotionalrelationshipbetweentheparents,poorself-esteemanddifficultywithstudies. Conclusion:PoorerQOLseemedtoreflectacircumstanceofsocialdisadvantageandpoorpsychosocialwell-being inwhichgirlsfaredworsethanboys.Thefindingsindicatethatprogramsthataddressparentalharmonyandschool programsthatpromotestudy-friendlyat
