Method:155suicidalpatientsconsecutivelyadmittedtoalargepsychiatriccenterduringa20-monthperiod, admissionstylesofwhomweremostlyinvoluntary,wereassessedusingStructuredClinicalInterviewsforDSM-IV AxisIandIIDisorders(SCID-ICVandSCID-II)andSB-relatedpsychiatricmeasures.Associationsofthepsychiatric diagnosesandSB-relatedcharacteristicswithgenderandagewereexamined. Results:ThecommonDSM-IVaxisIdiagnoseswereaffectivedisorders62%,anxietydisorders56%andsubstance- relateddisorders38%.56%ofthesubjectswerediagnosedashavingborderlinePD,and87%ofthem,atleastone typeofpersonalitydisorder(PD).SBmethodsusedpriortoadmissionwereself-cutting41%,overdosing32%,self- strangulation15%,jumpingfromaheight12%andattemptingtrafficdeath10%,thefirsttwoofwhichwere frequentamongyoungfemales.Themedian(range)ofthetotalnumberofSBsinthelifetimehistorywas7(1- 141).Severityofdepressivesymptomatology,suicidalintentandothersymptoms,proportionsofthesubjectswho reportedSB-precedinglifeeventsandlifeproblems,andchildhoodandadolescentabusewerecomparableto thoseofthepreviousstudiesconductedinmedicaloremergencyservicesettings.Genderandage-relevantlife- problemsandlifeeventswereidentified. Conclusions:Featuresofthestudiedsam
