Methods:Across-sectionalphonesurveywasconducted,invitingpeopleaged18oroldertocompletea37-item questionnairethatwasdevelopedbasedontheThematicHouseholdsurveysinHongKong,findingsofthehealth prorfessionalfocusgroupdiscussionsonpharmacist-ledpatientselfmanagementandliterature.Telephone numberswererandomlyselectedfromresidentialphonedirectories.Trainedinterviewersinvitedeligiblepersonsto participateusingthe“lastbirthdaymethod”.Associationsofdemographiccharacteristicswithknowledge,attitudes andbeliefsonself-medication,self-careandroleofpharmacists,andspendingonover-the-counter(OTC)products wereanalysedstatistically. Results:Atotalof1,560phonecallsweresuccessfullymadeand1,104respondentscompletedthesurveywhich indicatedaresponserateof70.8%.63.1%hadadequateknowledgeonusingOTCproducts.Thosewhohadno formaleducation/hadattendedprimaryeducation(OR=3.19,95%CI1.78-5.72;p0.001),hadattendedsecondary education(OR=1.50,95%CI1.03-2.19;p=0.035),andaged≥60years(OR=1.82,95%CI1.02-3.26;p=0.042) weremorelikelytohaveinadequateknowledgeonself-medication.Peoplewithchronicdiseasealsotendedto spendmorethanHKD100onwestern(OR=3.58,95%CI1.58-8.09;p=0.002)andChineseOTCproducts(OR= 2.94,95%CI1.08-7.95;p=0.034).94.6%believedthatpatientswithchronicillnessesshouldself-managetheir diseases.68%agreedthattheywouldconsultapharmacistbeforeusingOTCproductbutonly45%agreedthat pharmacistscouldplayaleadingroleinself-care.Mostcommonreasonsagainstpharmacistconsultationonself- medicationandself-carewereuncertai
