Results:TheuseofanintermatedrecombinantinbredlinepopulationallowedforpreciseQTLmapping.For29 traitsexaminedinanunreplicatedtimecoursetrialofdaysafterpollination,atotalof78QTLsweredetected,43 beingrelatedtokerneldesiccation,15tokernelweightand20toABAcontent.MultiQTLmodelsexplained35to 50%ofthephenotypicvariationfortraitsrelatedtowaterstatus,indicatingalargegeneticcontrolamenableto breeding.Tenofthe20locicontrollingABAcontentcolocatedwithpreviouslydetectedQTLscontrollingwater statusandABAcontentinwaterstressedleaves.Mappingofcandidategenesassociatedwithkerneldesiccation andABAbiosynthesisrevealedseveralcolocationsbetweengeneswithputativefunctionsandQTLs.Parallel investigationviaRT-PCRexperimentsshowedthattheexpressionpatternsoftheABA-responsiveRab17andRab28 genesaswellasthelateembryogenesisabundantEmb5andaquaporingeneswererelatedtodesiccationrate andparentalalleleeffect.Databasesearchesledtotheidentificationandmappingoftwozeaxanthinepoxidase (ZEP)andfivenovel9-cis-epoxycarotenoiddioxygenase(NCED)relatedgenes,bothgenefamiliesbeinginvolvedi
