QuantitativeLinkingHypothesesforInfantEye Movements DanielYurovsky1*,ShoheiHidaka2,RachelWu3 1DepartmentofPsychology,StanfordUniversity,Stanford,California,UnitedStatesofAmerica,2SchoolofKnowledgeScience,JapanAdvancedInstituteofScienceand Technology,Nomi,Ishikawa,Japan,3DepartmentofBrainandCognitiveSciences,UniversityofRochester,Rochester,NewYork,UnitedStatesofAmerica Abstract Thestudyofcognitivedevelopmenthinges,largely,ontheanalysisofinfantlooking.Butanalysesofeyegazedatarequire theadoptionoflinkinghypotheses:assumptionsabouttherelationshipbetweenobservedeyemovementsandunderlying cognitiveprocesses.Wedevelopageneralframeworkforconstructing,testing,andcomparingthesehypotheses,andthus forproducingnewinsightsintoearlycognitivedevelopment.Wefirstintroducethegeneralframework–applicabletoany infantgazeexperiment–andthendemonstrateitsutilitybyanalyzingdatafromasetofexperimentsinvestigatingtherole ofattentionalcuesininfantlearning.Thenewanalysisuncoverssignificantlymorestructureinthesedata,findingevidence oflearningthatwasnotfoundinstandardanalysesandshowinganunexpectedrelationshipbetweencueuseandlearning rate.Finally,wediscussgeneralimplicationsfortheconstructionandtestingofquantitativelinkinghypotheses.MATLAB codeforsamplelinkinghypothesescanbefoundonthefirstauthor’swebsite.
