Eigen’sinsightsweredevelopedinthecontextofgenomes withmanyloci,eachofwhichsufferedmutation. Appropriately,thequasispecieshassincebeenconsideredin thislarge-genomecontext.Yetmanyofitsconceptsareeasily illustratedinthemuchsimplercaseoffewgenotypes,which isourapproachhere.Ourresultsarenotnew,perse,butour modelsshouldconveyquasispeciesanderror-catastrophe conceptstoabroadaudienceandcorrectsomecommon misunderstandings. Q uasispeciesarecloudsofgenotypesthatappearina populationatmutation–selectionbalance.This concepthasrecentlyattractedtheattentionof virologists,becausemanyRNAvirusesappearto generatehighlevelsofgeneticvariationthatmayenhancethe evolutionofdrugresistanceandimmuneescape.The literatureontheseimportantevolutionaryprocessesis, however,quitechallenging.Hereweusesimplemodelstolink mutation–selectionbalancetheorytothemostnovel propertyofquasispecies:theerrorthreshold—amutation ratebelowwhichpopulationsequilibrateinatraditional mutation–selectionbalanceandabovewhichthepopulation experiencesanerrorcatastrophe,thatis,thelossofthe favoredgenotypethroughfrequentdeleteriousmutations.
