Background:Imatinibisastandardtreatmentforadvanced/metastaticGISTandinadjuvantsetting.Anaemiais frequentlyobservedinpatientswithadvancedGIST,andisoneofthemostfrequentsideeffectsofimatinibwith grade3–4anaemiain10%ofpatients.WhetherEPOtreatmentisusefulinthemanagementofGISTpatients receivingimatinibtreatmentisunknown. Methods:AretrospectivestudyofEPOtreatmentinGISTpatientsreceivingimatinibwasundertakenin4centres. ThirtyfourpatientsreceivedEPOtreatmentamongthe319GISTpatientstreatedwithimatinibinclinicaltrialsor withcompassionateusebetween2001and2003.TheefficacyofEPOontheanaemiaofpatientswithGISTtreated withimatinibwasanalyzed. Results:Therewere18malesand16femaleswithamedianageof59years.MedianWHO-PSwas1.Primary tumoursitesweremainlygastric(32%)andsmallbowel(29%).Sitesofmetastasesweremainlyliver(82%)and peritoneum(79%).ThemediandelaybetweentheinitiationofimatinibtreatmentandEPOwas58days(range0– 553).Medianhaemoglobin(Hb)levelpriortoEPOwas9g/dL(range6,9-11,8)and11,7g/dL(range6,8-14,4)after 2months.Anincreaseofmorethan2g/dLwasobservedin18(53%)ofpatients.Noneofthe7patientswho progressed(
