Methods:Thecurrentstudyassessedtheassociationsbetweenseminalandhormonalparametersandthe concentrationofthe3mostfrequentheavymetaltoxicants(lead,cadmiumandmercury)inthreedifferentbody fluids.Sixtyonemenattendinginfertilityclinicsthatparticipatedinacase-controlstudytoexploretheroleof environmentaltoxinsandlifestylesonmaleinfertilitywereanalyzed.Concentrationoflead,cadmiumandmercury weremeasuredinbloodandseminalplasmaandwholebloodusinganodicstrippingvoltammetryandatomic absorptionspectrophotometry.Serumsampleswereanalyzedforfollicle-stimulatinghormone,luteinizinghormone andtestosterone.SemenanalyseswereperformedaccordingtoWorldHealthOrganizationcriteria.Mann-Whitney testandSpearman’srankcorrelationswereusedforunadjustedanalyses.Multiplelinearregressionmodelswere performedcontrollingforage,bodymassindexandnumberofcigarettesperday. Results:Therewerenosignificantdifferencesbetweencasesandcontrolsintheconcentrationsofheavymetalsin anyofthethreebodyfluids.Inmultivariateanalysesusingallsubjectsnosignificantassociationswerefound betweenserumhormonelevelsandmetalconcentrations.Howevertherewasasignificantpositiveassociation betweenthepercentageofimmotilespermsandseminalplasmalevelsofleadandcadmium. Conclusions:Ourresultssuggestthatthepresenceofleadandcadmiuminthereproductivetractofmenmaybe relatedtoamoderatealterationoftheirseminalparame
