Methods:Theauthorsuseddatafromthe1921-26cohort(n=12,416,aged70-75in1996)oftheAustralian LongitudinalStudyonWomen’sHealth(ALSWH).VitalstatuswasdeterminedbylinkagetotheNationalDeath Index,andexpecteddeathswerederivedusingAustralianlifetables.Relativesurvivalwasestimatedusing observedsurvivalinthecohortdividedbyexpectedsurvivalamongwomenofthesameageandStateor Territory. Results:Overall,theALSWHwomenshowedrelativesurvival9.5%abovethegeneralpopulation.WithinStatesand Territories,therelativesurvivaladvantagevariedfrom6%to23%.Theinterval-specificrelativesurvivalremained relativelyconstantoverthe12years(1996-2008)underreview,indicatingthatthesurvivaladvantageofthecohort hasnotdiminishedovertime. Conclusion:Thisstudydemonstratesthatrelativesurvivalcanbeausefulmeasureofgeneralisabilityina longitudinalstudyofthehealthofthegeneralpopulation,particularlywhenparticipantsareolder.
