We hypothesized that the haptoglobin polymorphismmightcontributetotheincreasedoxidativestressandlow-gradechronicinflammationfrequentlyassociated withpolycysticovarysyndrome,obesity,andabnormalitiesofglucosetolerance. Methodology/PrincipalFindings:Serumhaptoglobinandthehaptoglobina–chainpolymorphismweredeterminedin141 patientswithpolycysticovarysyndromeand102non-hyperandrogenicwomen.Ofthewholegroupof243premenopausal women,117wereobeseand51showedabnormalglucosetolerance.Althoughserumhaptoglobinconcentrations were similar in PCOS patients and controls, the former presented with an increased frequency of Hp2 alleles (62% vs. 52%, P=0.023).Circulatinghaptoglobinlevelsincreasedwithobesity(P,0.001),yetnoassociationwasfoundbetweenobesity andhaptoglobingenotypes.Nodifferenceswereobservedinhaptoglobinlevelsorgenotypefrequenciesdependingon glucosetolerance.Fifty percentof thevariationinserum haptoglobinconcentrations was explainedby thevariabilityin serumC-reactiveproteinconcentrations,BMI,insulinsensitivityandhaptoglobingenotypes.
