The story is set at the times of Napoleonic Wars, and gives a satirical picture of a worldly society. Theme of this novel is the criticism of the bourgeois money relationship, revealing the bourgeois vulgar snobbish bourgeois socialism, pointed out the whole British society is a betray and vanity markets, honest good is useless, money is the only master. In the story, the author speaks in an ironical, sarcastic and cynical tone of an on-looker. It follows the fortune of two sharply contrasted characters. One is Rebecca Sharp, a low-origin, poor, beautiful, but tricky governess who esteems the values of Vanity Fair and determines to make her way to the upper society to achieve her ambition, Sharp racks her brains and uses every kind of means. Somehow she is a virtuous wife, an enviable social butterfly, but eventually she is seen through and fall into disrepute. The other one, Amelia Sedley is a noble, good-natured, tolerant though simple-minded girl. She gets well along with others. She pursues nothing but a simple life. She is portrayed as a coward because she yields herself up to fate quite contently. Her beloved husband is unfaithful to her, but she never doubts him. After her husband抯 death in action, she becomes a widow and lives a tough life. Yet, she is lucky. She comes across a perfect man Dobbin and gets married to him at last. Vanity Fair is a vanity world which filled with dust everywhere. It blinds the eyes of people, fixed in the mind, and never drops out. As a result, People are always preferred to look for a beautiful and colorful situation to show off in the Vanity Fair. By the way, I have to say Vanity Fair is so good a title that we can see through the hypocrisy of this human society. When I finished one third of the story, I guessed the fate of two figures above.
