Human herpesvirus-8 (HHV-8) replication is important both in transmission of HHV-8 and progression to KS. We characterizedthesitesandfrequencyofHHV-8detectioninUgandanswithandwithoutHIVandKS. Methods:ParticipantswereenrolledintooneoffourgroupsonthebasisofHIVandKSstatus(HIVnegative/KSnegative, HIVpositive/KSnegative,HIVnegative/KSpositive,andHIVpositive/KSpositive).Participantscollectedoralswabsdailyand clinicianscollectedoralswabs,anogenitalswabs,andplasmasamplesweeklyover4weeks.HHV-8DNAateachsitewas quantifiedbypolymerasechainreaction(PCR). Results:78participantscollectedatotalof2063oralsswabsand358plasmasamples.Ofthese,428(21%)oralswabsand96 (27%)plasmasampleshaddetectableHHV-8DNA.HHV-8wasdetectedmorefrequentlyinboththeoropharynxofpersons withKS(24(57%)of42personswithKSvs.8(22%)of36personswithout,p=0.002)andtheperipheralblood(30(71%)of42 personswithKSvs.8(22%)of36personswi
