GenotypeVJapaneseEncephalitisVirusIsEmerging Ming-HuaLi1,Shi-HongFu1,Wei-XinChen1,Huan-YuWang1,Yu-HongGuo2,Qi-YongLiu2,Yi-XingLi3, Hui-MingLuo3,WaDa4,DunZhuDuoJi4,Xiu-MinYe4,Guo-DongLiang1* 1StateKeyLaboratoryforInfectiousDiseasePreventionandControl,InstituteforViralDiseaseControlandPrevention,ChineseCenterforDiseaseControlandPrevention, Beijing,China,2NationalInstituteforCommunicableDiseaseControlandPrevention,ChineseCenterforDiseaseControlandPrevention,Beijing,China,3ChineseCenter forDiseaseControlandPrevention,Beijing,China,4TibetCenterforDiseaseControlandPrevention,Tibet,China Abstract Japaneseencephalitis(JE)isaglobalpublichealthissuethathasspreadwidelytomorethan20countriesinAsiaandhas extendeditsgeographicrangetothesouthPacificregionincludingAustralia.JEhasbecomethemostimportantcauseof viralencephalitisintheworld.Japaneseencephalitisviruses(JEV)aredividedintofivegenotypes,basedonthenucleotide sequenceoftheenvelope(E)gene.TheMuarstrain,isolatedfrompatientinMalayain1952,isthesoleexampleofgenotype VJEV.Here,theXZ0934strainofJEVwasisolatedfromCulextritaeniorhynchus,collectedinChina.Thecompletenucleotide andaminoacidsequenceofXZ0934strainhavebeendetermined.Thenucleotidedivergencerangedfrom20.3%to21.4% and amino acid divergence ranged from 8.4% to 10.0% when compared with the 62 known JEV isolates that belong to genotypeI–IV.ItrevealslowsimilaritybetweenXZ0934andgenotypeI–IVJEVs.Phylogeneticanalysisusingbothcomplete genomeandstructuralgenenucleotidesequencesdemonstratesthatXZ0934belongstogenotypeV.This,inturn,suggests that genotype V JEV is emerging in JEV endemic areas.
