CouldWorkBeaSourceofBehaviouralDisorders?A StudyinHorses MartineHausberger*,EmmanuelGautier,Ve′roniqueBiquand,ChristopheLunel,PatrickJe′go Universite′ deRennes1,UMR6552EthologieAnimaleetHumaine,Unite′ MixtedeRechercheCNRS,CampusdeBeaulieu,Rennes,France Abstract Stress atwork, as shownby anumber ofhuman studies, may leadtoavariety of negativeanddurable effects,such as impairedpsychologicalfunctioning(anxiety,depression…).Horsessharewithhumansthischaracteristicofworkingona dailybasisandaresubmittedthentoworkstressorsrelatedtophysicalconstraintsand/ormore‘‘psychological’’conflicts, suchaspotentialcontroversialordersfromtheridersortherequirementtosuppressemotions.Onanotherhand,horses mayperformabnormalrepetitivebehaviour(‘‘stereotypies’’)inresponsetoadverselifeconditions.Inthepresentstudy,we investigatedwhetherthetypeofworkthehorsesareusedformayhaveanimpactontheirtendencytoshowstereotypic behaviour(anditstype)outsidework.Observationsintheirboxof76horsesalllivinginthesameconditions,belongingto onebreedandonesex,revealedthattheprevalenceandtypesofstereotypiesperformedstronglydependeduponthetype ofworktheywereusedfor.Thestereotypiesobservedinvolvedmostlymouthmovementsandheadtossing/nodding.Work constraintsprobablyaddedtounfavourablelivingconditions,favouringtheemergenceofchronicabnormalbehaviours. Thisisespeciallyremarkableasthe23hoursspentintheboxwereinfluencedbytheonehourworkperformedeveryday. Toourknowledge,thisisthefirstevidenceofpotentialeffectsofworkstressorsontheemergenceofabnormalbehaviours inananimalspecies.Itraisesanimportantlineofthoughtonthechronicimpactoftheworksituationonthedailylifeof individuals.
