SelectiveSorptionofDissolvedOrganicCarbon CompoundsbyTemperateSoils SindhuJagadamma*,MelanieA.Mayes,JanaR.Phillips ClimateChangeScienceInstituteandEnvironmentalSciencesDivision,OakRidgeNationalLaboratory,OakRidge,Tennessee,UnitedStatesofAmerica Abstract Background:Physico-chemicalsorptionontosoilmineralsisoneofthemajorprocessesofdissolvedorganiccarbon(OC) stabilizationindeepersoils.TheinteractionofDOConsoilsolidsisrelatedtothereactivityofsoilminerals,thechemistryof sorbatefunctionalgroups,andthestabilityofsorbatetomicrobialdegradation.Thisstudywasconductedtoexaminethe sorption of diverse OC compounds (D-glucose, L-alanine, oxalic acid, salicylic acid, and sinapyl alcohol) on temperate climatesoilorders(Mollisols,UltisolsandAlfisols). Methodology:Equilibriumbatchexperimentswereconductedusing0–100mgCL21atasolid-solutionratioof1:60for 48hrsonnaturalsoilsandonsoilssterilizedbyc-irradiation.Themaximumsorptioncapacity,Qmaxandbindingcoefficient, kwerecalculatedbyfittingtotheLangmuirmodel. Results:Ultisolsappearedtosorbmoreglucose,alanine,andsalicylicacidthandidAlfisolsorMollisolsandtheisotherms followedanon-linearpattern(higherk).Sterileexperimentsrevealedthatglucoseandalaninewerebothreadilydegraded and/orincorporatedintomicrobialbiomassbecausetheobservedQmax understerileconditionsdecreasedby22–46%for glucose and 17–77% for alanine as compared to non-sterile conditions. Mollisols, in contrast, more readily reacted with oxalic acid (Qmax of 886mgkg21) and sinapyl alcohol (Qmax of 2031mgkg21), and no degradation was observed. The reactivityofAlfisolstoDOCwasintermediatetothatofUltisolsandMollisols,anddegradationfollowedsimilarpatternsas forUltisols. Conclusion: This study demonstrated that three common temperate soil orders experienced differential sorption and degradationofsimpleOCcompounds,indicatingthatsorbatechemistryplaysasignificantroleinthesorptivestabilization ofDOC.
