Methods:Participantswere787CapeCod,Massachusetts,womendiagnosedwithbreastcancerbetween1988 and1995and721controls.Telephoneinterviewsaskedaboutproductuse,beliefsaboutbreastcanceretiology, andestablishedandsuspectedbreastcancerriskfactors.Toevaluatepotentialrecallbias,westratifiedproduct-use oddsratiosbybeliefsaboutwhetherchemicalsandpollutantscontributetobreastcancer;wecomparedthese resultswithoddsratiosforfamilyhistory(whicharelesssubjecttorecallbias)stratifiedbybeliefsaboutheredity. Results:Breastcancerriskincreasedtwo-foldinthehighestcomparedwithlowestquartileofself-reported combinedcleaningproductuse(AdjustedOR=2.1,95%CI:1.4,3.3)andcombinedairfresheneruse(AdjustedOR =1.9,95%CI:1.2,3.0).Littleassociationwasobservedwithpesticideuse.Instratifiedanalyses,cleaningproducts oddsratiosweremoreelevatedamongparticipantswhobelievedpollutantscontribute“alot”tobreastcancer andmovedtowardsthenullamongtheotherparticipants.Incomparison,theoddsratioforbreastcancerand familyhistorywasmarkedlyhigheramongwomenwhobelievedthathereditycontributes“alot”(OR=2.6,95% CI:1.9,3.6)andnotelevatedamongothers(OR=0.7,95%CI:0.5,1.1). Conclusions:Resultsofthisstudysuggestthatcleaningproductusecontributestoincreasedbreastcancerrisk. However,resultsalsohighlightthedifficultyofdistinguishinginretrospectiveself-reportstudiesbetweenvalid associationsandtheinfluenceofrecallbias.Recallbiasmayinfluencehigheroddsratiosforproductuseamong participantswhobelievedt
