SensoryIntegrationRegulatingMaleCourtshipBehavior inDrosophila DimitrijeKrstic1,2,WernerBoll1,MarkusNoll1* 1InstituteforMolecularBiology,UniversityofZu¨rich,Zu¨rich,Switzerland,2Ph.D.PrograminMolecularLifeSciences,Zu¨rich,Switzerland Abstract The courtship behavior of Drosophila melanogaster serves as an excellent model system to study how complex innate behaviorsarecontrolledbythenervoussystem.Tounderstandhowtheunderlyingneuralnetworkcontrolsthisbehavior,it isnotsufficienttounravelitsarchitecture,butalsocrucialtodecipheritslogic.Bysystematicanalysisofhowvariationsin sensory inputs alter the courtship behavior of a na?¨ve male in the single-choice courtship paradigm, we derive a model describingthelogicofthenetworkthatintegratesthevarioussensorystimuliandelicitsthiscomplexinnatebehavior.This approach and the model derived from it distinguish (i) between initiation and maintenance of courtship, (ii) between courtshipindaylightandinthedark,wherethemaleusesascanningstrategytoretrievethedecampingfemale,and(iii) between courtship towards receptive virgin females and mature males. The last distinction demonstrates that sexual orientationofthecourtingmale,intheabsenceofdiscriminatoryvisualcues,dependsontheintegrationofgustatoryand behavioralfeedbackinputs,butnotonolfactorysignalsfromthecourtedanimal.Themodelwillcomplementstudieson theconnectivityandintrinsicpropertiesoftheneuronsformingthecircuitrythatregulatesmalecourtshipbehavior.
