Ancient DNA studies have great potential to shed light on the evolution of populations becausetheyprovidetheopportunitytosamplefromthesamepopulationatdifferentpointsintime.Here,weshowthata sampleofmitochondrialDNA(mtDNA)controlregionsequencesfrom68earlymedievalIcelandicskeletalremainsismore closelyrelatedtosequencesfromcontemporaryinhabitantsofScotland,Ireland,andScandinaviathantothosefromthe modernIcelandicpopulation.DuetoafasterrateofgeneticdriftintheIcelandicmtDNApoolduringthelast1,100years, thesequencescarriedbythefirstsettlerswerebetterpreservedintheirancestralgenepoolsthanamongtheirdescendants in Iceland. These results demonstrate the inferential power gained in ancient DNA studies through the application of populationgeneticsanalysestorelativelylargesamples.
