Main Outcome Measures: Sex-ratio among mothers in families with a previous girl and in those with a previous boy, prevalenceofindigenousmedicineuseandsex-ratiointhoseusingmedicinesforsexselection. Results:Overalltherewere806girlsto1000boys.Thesex-ratiowas720:1000iftherewasonepreviousgirland178:1000if thereweretwopreviousgirls.Insecondchildrenoffamilieswithapreviousboy1017girlswerebornper1000boys.Sex- ratiointhosewithonepreviousgirl,whoweretakingtraditionalmedicinesforsexselection,was928:1000. Conclusion:Evidencefromthesecondchildrenclearlyshowsthesex-ratioisbeingmanipulatedbyhumaninterventions. Moremotherswithpreviousgirlstendtousetraditionalmedicinesforsexselection,intheirsubsequentpregnancies.Those takingsuchmedicationdonotseemtobehelpedaccordingtoexpectations.Theyseemtorelyonthismethodandsoare lesslikelyusemoredefinitivemethodslikesexselectiveabortions.Thisisthefirstsuchprospectiveinvestigationofsexratio insecondchildrenlookedatagainstthesexofpreviouschildren.Morestudiesareneededtoconfirmthefindings.
