Inthispaper,wepresenttheargumentsfor, and implications of, considering cannabis useasariskfactorforpsychosisinthe2005 GlobalBurdenofDisease(GBD)project. Comparativeriskassessmentsestimatetheproportionofadiseasethatcanbe attributed to a particular risk exposure and are important guides for health planning. N Inobservationalstudies,therehasbeenconsistentevidencethatcannabisuse is associated with an increased risk of schizophrenia and more generally, psychosis. N N Thereisdebateaboutwhethersuchobservationalevidenceissufficienttoinfer thatcannabisuseisacontributorycauseofpsychosis. Given thecontroversy, shouldthe comparative risk assessment in thecurrent revision of the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) include an attribution of psychosistocannabisuse? ExaminingRiskFactorsfor DiseaseBurden N Wearguethattheriskassessmentshouldbeincludedbecausetheevidenceis as good as that for many other risk factors included in the GBD, psychotic disorders are associated with substantial unavertable disability, and cannabis useisapotentiallypreventableexposure.
