Presentationofthehypothesis:Itishypothesizedthatstress-inducedsurvivalmechanismsenabletheserotype Enteritidistopersistentlycolonizetheoviductwithoutcausingdamageandexcessiveinflammation,andtocope withtheantimicrobialcompoundspresentineggwhite. Testingthehypothesis:TotestthehypothesisfirstofallSalmonellaEnteritidisgenesthatareessentialfor colonizationoftheoviductandsurvivalineggsneedtobeidentified.Comparativegenomicstoolsshouldbeused toidentifygenesorpathogenicityislandsthatarepresentinSalmonellaEnteritidisandnotinthemultiplenon egg-contaminatingserotypes.High-throughputsignature-tagged-mutagenesisapproaches,coupledtomicro-array detectionofthegenesthatleadtoanattenuatedphenotypewhenmutatedisproposedasanidealtoolto identifygenesinvolvedinoviductcolonizationandeggwhitesurvival.Identifyingthestressorsandantibacterial moleculesintheoviductandintheeggwhitethatlimitcolonizationorsurvivalofnon-Enteritidisserotypesisa secondimportantobjectivethatcantheoreticallybeachievedusingscreeningsofexpressedoviductcDNAlibraries fortheirantibacterialactivityagainststrainsfrommultipleserotypes.Finally,theeffectofcontactwiththese stressorsintheoviductoreggwhiteonSalmonellageneexpressionwillneedtobeanalyzed,inordertoclarify whetherserotypeEnteritidis-specificregulationofcertainstress-survivalpathwaysareeitherornotpresent. Implicationsofthehypothesis:Knowledgeonthepathogenesisofegginfecti
