Methods:Face-to-faceEnglish-andSpanish-languagecognitiveinterviewswereconductedamongurbanHispanic andAfricanAmericanpatientswithrheumaticdiseasetodevelopaquestionnairebooklet.Sixmeasuresvalidating patient-reportedoutcomeswereincluded:theArthritisSelf-EfficacyScale,theStanfordHealthAssessment QuestionnaireDisabilityIndex,theWong-BakerFacesPainScale,theShortAcculturationScale,theCenterfor EpidemiologicStudiesDepressionScaleandtheInventoryofComplementaryandAlternativeMedicinePractices. Asampleofpatients(n=15)attendingtheNationalInstituteofArthritisandMusculoskeletalandSkinDiseases CommunityHealthCenterparticipatedintheinitialinterviews.Revisedmeasureswerefurthertestedforreliability inaseparatesampleofpatients(n=109)uponenrollmentatthehealthcenter. Results:Cognitiveinterviewsprovidedfeedbackforquestionnairemodificationsandmethodstoenhancecontent validityanddataquality,includingdiscardingredundantquestions,providingvisualaidsandconcreteexamples whenappropriateandincreasingtheuseofraciallyandethnicallyconcordantinterviewers.Thecognitive interviewsfurtherelucidatedthatsomecontextualassumptionsandlanguageusageintheoriginalquestionnaires maynothavetakeneachrespondent’senvironmentalandsocioculturalcontextintoconsideration.Internal reliabilityforpreviou
