The use of standard protocols, such as SWE, to exchange information betweensmartphonesandsensorinfrastructuresbringsbene?tssuchasinteroperabilityand scalability, buttheirrelianceonXMLisapotentialproblemwhenlargevolumesofdata aretransferred,duetolimitedbandwidthandprocessingcapabilitiesonmobilephones. In thisarticlewepresentaperformanceanalysisabouttheuseofSWEstandardsinsmartphone applicationstoconsumeandproduceenvironmentalsensordata,analysingtowhatextentthe performanceproblemsrelatedtoXMLcanbealleviatedbyusingalternativeuncompressed andcompressedformats.
