Itcanbeappliedtotaskslike compression,eventdetection,andeventrecognition.Thistechniqueisbasedonalineartrans- formwherethesensormeasurementsareprojectedonasetofprincipalcomponents . When sensormeasurementsarecorrelated, asmallsetofprincipalcomponentscanexplainmost ofthemeasurementsvariability. Thisallowstosigni?cantlydecreasetheamountofradio communicationandofenergyconsumption. Inthispaper,weshowthatthepoweriteration methodcanbedistributedinasensornetworkinordertocomputeanapproximationofthe principalcomponents.Theproposedimplementationreliesonanaggregationservice,which hasrecentlybeenshowntoprovideasuitableframeworkfordistributingthecomputationof alineartransformwithinasensornetwork.Wealsoextendthispreviousworkbyprovidinga detailedanalysisofthecomputational,memory,andcommunicationcostsinvolved. Acom- pressionexperimentinvolvingrealdatavalidatesthealgorithmandillustratesthetradeoffs betweenaccuracyandcommunicationcosts.
