Abstract Background:Anationwidesurveyonthemicrobialetiologyofcasesofsubclinicalmastitisindairycowswas carriedoutondairyfarmsinSweden.Theaimwastoinvestigatethemicrobialpanoramaandtheoccurrenceof antimicrobialresistance.Moreover,differencesbetweennewlyinfectedcowsandchronicallyinfectedcowswere investigated. Methods:Intotal,583quartermilksampleswerecollectedfrom583dairycowsat226dairyfarmsfromFebruary 2008toFebruary2009.ThequartermilksampleswerebacteriologicalinvestigatedandscoredusingtheCalifornia MastitisTest.Staphylococciweretestedforbetalactamaseproductionandpresenceofresistancewasevaluatedin allspecificudderpathogens.Differencesbetweennewlyinfectedcowsandchronicallyinfectedcowswere statisticallyinvestigatedusinglogisticregressionanalysis. Results:Themostcommonisolatesof590bacteriologicaldiagnoseswereStaphylococcus(S)aureus(19%)and coagulase-negativestaphylococci(CNS;16%)followedbyStreptococcus(Str)dysgalactiae(9%),Str.uberis(8%), Escherichia(E.)coli(2.9%),andStreptococcusspp.(1.9%).Sampleswithnogrowthorcontaminationconstituted22% and18%ofthediagnoses,respectively.Thedistributionofthemostcommonlyisolatedbacteriaconsideringonly bacteriologicalpositivesampleswere:S.aureus-31%,CNS-27%,Str.dysgalactiae-15%,Str.uberis-14%,E.coli- 4.8%,andStreptococcusspp.-3.1%.TherewasanincreasedriskoffindingS.aureus,Str.uberisorStr.dysgalactiaein milksamplesfromchronicallyinfectedcowscomparedtofindingsinmilksamplesfromnewlyinfectedcows.Four percentoftheS.aureusisolatesand35%oftheCNSisolateswereresistanttopenicillinG.Overall,resistanceto otherantimicrobialsthanpenicillinGwasuncommon.
