Barneyetal.BMCPsychiatry2011,11:88 /1471-244X/11/88 RESEARCH ARTICLE OpenAccess Explicitandimplicitinformationneedsofpeople withdepression:aqualitativeinvestigationof problemsreportedonanonlinedepression supportforum LisaJBarney1*,KathleenMGriffiths1andMichelleABanfield2 Abstract Background:Healthmanagementisimpededwhenconsumersdonotpossessadequateknowledgeabouttheir illness.Atapublichealthlevel,consumerknowledgeaboutdepressionisparticularlyimportantbecausedepression ishighlyprevalentandcausessubstantialdisabilityandburden.However,currentlylittleisknownaboutthe informationneedsofpeoplewithdepression.Thisstudyaimedtoinvestigatetheexplicitandimplicitinformation needsofusersofanonlinedepressionsupportforum. Methods:Asampleof2680postswassystematicallyselectedfromthreediscussionforumsonanonline depressionbulletinboard(.au).Datawereexaminedforevidenceofrequestsforinformation (reflectingexplicitneeds)andreportsofpastorcurrentproblems(implicitneeds).Thematicanalysiswas conductedusingadata-driveninductiveapproachwiththeassistanceofNVivo7,andinstancesofquestionsand peoplereportingparticulartypesofproblemswererecorded. Results:Atotalof134participantswithpersonalexperienceofdepressioncontributedtothedataanalysed.Six broadthemesrepresentedparticipantqueriesandreportedproblems:Understandingdepression;disclosureand stigma;medication;treatmentandservices;copingwithdepression;andcomorbidhealthproblems.Avarietyof specificneedswereevidentwithinthesebroadthematicareas.Somepeople(n=46)expressedtheirinformation needsbyaskingdirectquestions(47queries)butthemajorityofneedswereexpressedimplicitly(351problems) bythe134participants.Themostevidentneedforinformationrelatedtocopingwithdepressionandits consequences,followedbytopicsassociatedwithmedication,treatmentandservices. Conclusions:Peoplewithdepressionhavesubstantialunmetinformationneedsandrequirestrategiestodeal withthedifficultiestheyface.Theyrequireaccesstohighqualityandrelevantonlineresourcesandprofessionals; thus,thereisaneedtorect
