Methods:Thisexplorativecross-sectionalsurveystudyincludedaconveniencesampleof170patientswithrhinitis andclinicalsuspicionofallergyatthedepartmentofOtorhinolaryngologyandAllergology.Patients’perceived knowledgelevel,expectations,patientpreferences,andfearofsideeffectsofallergytreatmentwerecollectedviaa self-reportquestionnairedevelopedforthepurposeofthisstudy. Results:22%ofallpatients(38/170)reportedtohaveknowledgeaboutanti-allergictreatment.40%(55/170)of rhinitispatientsexpectedtobecuredbytheprescribedtreatment,whereas43%(73/170)ofpatientsexpected suppressionofallergicsymptoms.Nasalspraywasthepreferredrouteofanti-allergicdrugadministrationin30% (52/170)ofpatients,followedbyoraltreatment(24%;42/170),combinationtherapy(16%;30/170),andinjection therapy(15%;27/170).Morepatientswouldchooseacombinationtreatmentwithstep-downapproach (31%;53/170)thanmono-therapywithastep-upapproach(20%;34/170).Fearforsideeffectswasreportedmainly fornasalcorticosteroids(48%;81/170)andlessfororalantihistamines(33%;36/170),leucotrieneantagonists (21%,36/170)andimmunotherapy(19%,33/170). Conclusions:Patientsconsultingforrhinitishavehighexpectationsofanti-allergictreatment,preferanasalspray aboveoraltreatment,prefercombinedtreatmentratherthanmonotherapy,andfearadverseeventsofanti-allergic treatment.
