Abstract – The wide range of genetic parameter estimates for production traits and nema-
tode resistancein sheep obtained from ?eldstudies gives risetomuch speculation. Using a
mathematicalmodeldescribinghost–parasiteinteractionsinageneticallyheterogeneouslamb
population,weinvestigatedtheconsequence of:(i)geneticrelationshipsbetweenunderlying
growthandimmunologicaltraitsonestimatedgeneticparametersforperformanceandnema-
toderesistance,and(ii)alterationsinresourceallocationontheseparameterestimates.Altering
geneticcorrelationsbetweenunderlyinggrowthandimmunologicaltraitshadlargeimpactson
estimatedgeneticparametersforproductionandresistancetraits.Extremeparametervaluesob-
servedfrom?eldstudiescouldonlybereproducedbyassuminggeneticrelationshipsbetween
theunderlyinginputtraits.Alteringpreferencesintheresourceallocationhadlesspronounced
e?ects on the genetic parameters for the same traits. E?ects were stronger when allocation
shiftedtowardsgrowth,inwhichcasewormburdenandfaecaleggcountsincreasedandge-
neticcorrelationsbetweentheseresistancetraitsandbodyweightbecamestronger.Ourstudy
hasimplicationsforthebiologicalinterpretationof?elddata,andforthepredictionofselec-
tionresponsefrombreedingfornematoderesistance.Itdemonstratestheprofoundimpactthat
moderateleve
