Methods:Utilizingagroundedtheoryapproach,indepthsemi-structuredinterviewswereconductedwith22 theoreticallysampledyoung,middleagedandseniorAboriginalmenandtraditionalhealers.Analysiswas conductedbyasingleinvestigatorusingconstantcomparisonmethods. Results:Depressivesymptomswerecommonandidentifiable,andlargelyconsistentwithsymptomprofilesseen innon-Aboriginalgroups.ForAboriginalmen,depressionwasexpressedandunderstoodasprimarilyrelatedto weaknessorinjuryofthespirit,withalackofreferencetohopelessnessandspecificsomaticcomplaints.The primarycontributorstodepressionrelatedtothelossofconnectiontosocialandculturalfeaturesofAboriginallife, cumulativestressandmarginalisation. Conclusions:DepressionanddepressivesymptomatologyclearlyexistsinAboriginalmen,howeverits determinantsandexpressiondifferfrommainstreampopulations.Emotionswereunderstoodwithinthe constructionofspirit,Kurunpa,whichwasvulnerabletorepetitiveandpowerfulnegativesocialforces,loss,and stressacrossthelifecourse,andservedtoframethephysicalandemotionalexperienceandexpressionof depression.
